STA is designed to encourage and recognize music theory achievement among Colorado music students. Study guides, sample questions, and workbooks from Keynote Independent Theory Service (KITS) support piano, voice, and instrumental students, with levels ranging from Primary through Step 6 based on knowledge rather than age. Assessments include a written exam, and beginning at Step 1, listening and playing components aligned with the student’s assigned level. Students earn a KITS Certificate of Merit, may qualify for CMTSA STA medals and the State Honor Roll, and can test at the listed site or a participating local association.
STA (Student Theory Assessment) information is found on p. 4, and pp. 15-16 in the CSMTA Student Activity Handbook.
Teachers of STA students must be present to assist at the event.
